What is The
Performance Driving School
A PERFORMANCE DRIVING EVENT
IS…..
One of the
most popular forms of enjoyment for an owner of a high performance car is
high performance driving. Far too many owners currently take their
enthusiasm for the raw power to the city streets and country roads –
sometimes with unfortunate results. The Performance Driving School (PDS)
offers the opportunity for owners to explore the limits of their cars and
themselves as drivers in a legal, highly disciplined, and safe environment.
Each
Performance Driving event features three different components:
(1) A High
Performance Driving School
(2) A Timed Solo
Competition
(3) Performance
Racing League
The High Performance Driving School
Venue
Development, Inc. (VDI) was founded to provide “The Performance Driving
School”. This continues to be our main emphasis. Far too many owners of
high performance cars have had accidents during the early term of their
ownership. In large part, this results from the very reason the individual
purchased the car in the first place: its unique power and handling
characteristics.
We strive
to make a positive impact on the lives of the owners and their families by
teaching proper car handling and defensive driving techniques. The most
critical aspects of our teaching cannot be obtained from textbooks or inside
school cars that do not resemble your car in terms of power to weight ratio,
throttle response, cornering attitude, braking and traction. The most
effective method of instruction is inside your car.
Not only
is this the most effective training technique, but it also is the least
expensive to the student. Most high performance driving schools charge
their students approximately $800-$1,000 per day and put their students in
cars that don't exhibit the handling characteristics or driving techniques
required of your car. Our students take the class in their own car, pay
less than $300 per day. Rookies will additionally receive a $100 discount
applied to their first event.
Instruction is provided for beginning, intermediate and advanced drivers
through a combination of on-track and classroom sessions. Drivers are
broken into four groups: Green – Rookie; Blue – Intermediate; White –
Advanced and Red – Licensed Racers. To maximize safety and provide a
comfortable learning environment, each student is placed in one of these run
group with students of similar experience. Run group size is strictly
limited to assure maximum quality and quantity of track time. Students are
paired for the event with instructors who are experienced drivers, ensuring
that techniques appropriate for your cars are taught. Lap times are
carefully monitored for each student to assure they are properly placed on
track with drivers of equal skill. Adjustments are made throughout the
weekend to maintain maximum spacing of cars on track. Restrictions on
passing are strictly enforced. Professional corner workers are present at
all significant flag stations. Professional medical and rescue personnel
are always present.
Performance-specific vendors are present at each event to assist
participants with tires, brakes, safety, and other trackside maintenance
services. Other than in Detroit there is more expertise present at a PDS
event than any other place on earth. And everyone’s goal is to provide
drivers with as safe a learning experience as possible.
Timed Solo Competition
After experiencing the
thrill and satisfaction of learning basic high performance driving skills,
most graduates of The Performance Driving School desire to participate in
more driving schools and events. At the same event, but in separate run
groups, VDI conducts competition events to satisfy these needs. This
enables graduates of the school to experiment with timed competition on the
very same day or weekend. Cars are classified by their modifications so
that driver skill is the primary determining factor in differences in
performance. Safety continues to be paramount so safety modifications are
required to be made in proportion to the performance modifications.
Spectating between run sessions enables the students to observe first hand
what advanced drivers are able to accomplish on track with cars similar to
their own. Late model performance cars from completely stock to full race
are on hand, showcasing many vendors’ products. Approximately 550 owners
participate in both the school and the timed competition each year. This
number has increased each year we have been in operation.
Performance Racing
League
A number
of our more serious Challenge series competitors expressed the desire to do
real wheel to wheel racing, but in a highly disciplined, relatively safe
environment with other owners/drivers that they knew and trusted. In
response to their needs, VDI created the Performance Racing League. We
experimented with this at a number of our events in 1998 and determined that
we would make it a permanent component of all VDI events beginning in 1999.
Safety and driver skill are again emphasized requiring specific changes for
safety and by allowing modifications designed to equalize cars. Hoosier
Racing Tires has been the series sponsor since its inception and we have
contract through 2007. As of this date, approximately fifty-five VDI
graduates participate in the PRL. As a testament to the driver skills
learned in the PRL, fifteen of our drivers are successfully competing in the
SCCA Pro World Challenge series.
Whatever your
experience level there is a place for you at The Performance Driving
School. Come join us!
